UEFA Champions League

Earlier today, we found out the remaining eight teams to make the round of 16. included Liverpool (England), Sevilla (Spain), Manchester City (England), Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Besiktas (Turkey), FC Porto ( Portugal), Tottenham Hotspur (England) and Real Madrid (Spain) (the other eight teams can be found on my previous post).

The days headline game belonged to Real Madrid vs. Borussia Dortmund, based soley on club size and prestige. Madrid won the match 3-2.  Ronaldo was at it again, breaking another record, by scoring in every group stage game. As a Barcelona and Messi fan, this isn’t that intriguing of news but it is what it is. In a huge upset, Manchester City, who haven’t lost a game all year (all competitions), wound up losing to an Ukraine powerhouse club Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian Premier League is not an overall great league when it comes to the product on the field, but Shakhtar has some good players to compete in Champions League.  You would think their first loss might come to a fellow big time Premier League club but I guess thats why you have to play the games and not use whats on paper.

The round of 16 draw is on December 11th and the first leg of action begins February 13th.

UEFA Champions League

Atletico Madrid was stunned, shocked, and flat out embarrassed as they have been eliminated from champions league play in the group stage (first round). They recently made the champions league final in 2014 and 2016. This is the first time they have been knocked out in the group stage since the 2009-10 season, where they found themselves in the europa league and eventually won the competition. We saw Manchester United (England), FC Basel (Switzerland), PSG (France), Bayarn Munich (Germany), AS Roma. (Italy), Chelsea (England), FC Barcelona (Spain), and Juventus (Italy) all advance to the next round. Eight more games tomorrow 12/6/18 to find out who else advances.

LIONEL MESSI STAYING AT BARCELONA

Arguably the best player ever and in present times (some say Cristiano Ronaldo) has signed a new contract extension to stay at FC Barcelona. it goes through 2021 and Messi said “I want to be here for my whole career, I’ve always said that it’s my dream to retire at Barcelona and we’re on the path to that.” Now as a Barcelona fan myself, I couldn’t be more happy. There was a lot speculation about him fleeing to Manchester City to re-kindle his relationship with coach Pep Guardiola when he was at Barça 2008 – 2012 where they won two champions league titles. in closing, this is HUGE news for Barcelona fans and sad news for every La Liga team especially Real Madrid.
